Das Große Welttheater
The exhibition showed 150 works from five decades of German art history: Painting, sculpture, drawing, graphics and watercolor
Barlach Kunstmuseum Wedel
The exhibition DAS GROSSE WELTTHEATER (The great world theatre) showed 150 works, painting, sculpture, drawing, graphics and watercolor from five decades of German art history, which in their themes and issues often resonate strongly with the present.
The exhibition began with such famous representatives of German Expressionism as Emil Nolde, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, August Macke, Otto Mueller and traces the fever curve of a society on the move. A society familiar with uninhibitedness and ego-realization just as much as catastrophic mood and the longing for a new world. The pictures in the exhibition tell of passion and hope, but also of the shocks of a time that ended in a monstrous tragedy, World War I.
